Australia has defeated Malawi in the opening game of the 2017 Fast 5 Netball World Series at Hisense Arena after a blistering second quarter attack.

Australia won 34-21 off the back of an outstanding performance from shooter Gretel Tippett who finished with 22 goals for the game.

In a low scoring first quarter, the Australians started strong with a number of skill errors costing Malawi from capitalising on strong centre court work from Thandie Galeta.

Australia took a commanding lead after the break, thanks in part to their power play, with Tippett scoring 14 of her 22 in the second for the Aussies to finish the quarter with a 26-12 lead.

Malawi shooter Joyce Mvula battled hard throughout the game but her side’s inability to score from outside the inner circle (0-7) during their power play third quarter allowed the Australian’s more breathing room going into the last.

Despite a 31-16 deficit going into the last quarter, Malawi continued to fight and won the quarter 5-3.

Along with Tippett, Kate Moloney was among Australia’s best while Takondwa Lwazi and Thandie Galeta battled hard all day with Joyce Mvula for Malawi.

‘Yeah, I think they had to catch up with us, so I think we were just wary that they can shoot the two and three points quite comfortably. So I think it was just really trying to push them to the posts so that we could still keep that lead, and our job is to get the ball and especially in their power play, so that’s what we were trying to achieve.’ Sam Poolman said.

“The game was okay, I can say we didn’t start well but the game was okay. I can just say well played today to team Australia for doing their best, for winning the game, said Joyce Mvula about how she felt the game went.
