Masinja Villages’ War: DC Moves in

The district commissioner for Lilongwe, Lawford Palani, has deployed a team in the area of T/A Chitekwere to assess the state of affairs between two warring villages where stakeholders expect to go and end a bloody land dispute.

The deployment follows consensus made when the district commissioner engaged traditional leaders from the area, the police, MPs from the area and council officials.

Palani expressed shock at the attacks on Masinja village and the aftermath, and urged the stakeholders to move swiftly to contain the situation.

“It is a big concern to note that people, women and children are displaced and have neither shelter nor food. Something has to be done, urgently,” said Palani.

Palani added, “The meeting, therefore, resolved to first provide assistance, which is food and shelter. But we also agreed that a team from the district council office go on the ground to assess the situation to determine whether it is conducive to hold negotiations between the villagers right in the area.”

Officer in-Charge for Nathenje Police, Assistant police Commissioner Thandiwe Mwalwenje pledged to increase police presence in the area to calm the situation.

“The DC’s office has taken over the issue, but as police, we will institute patrols can quell the attacks,” Mwalwenje said.

Three weeks ago, people of Kasalika and Jamisoni villages attacked the whole of Masinja village accusing them of grabbing land as they allegedly are of another blood line.

The Masinja Villagers were forced into the bush with no food and clothes while seven more villagers joined the attack, forcing them to sound an SOS for the same.

Over 50 grass thatched houses where burnt.
