Ntcheu District Health Office (DHO) has expressed worry over continued abuse of insecticides treated mosquito nets, jeopardizing efforts of fighting malaria in the district.

An official from Ntcheu DHO Godknows Maseko told Zodiak Online that the practice is common in the lower part of the district where it borders with Mangochi.

He said most communities tend to sell or use the mosquito nets for fishing at the lake.

"As an office, we go around sensitizing communities on preventative measures to address such challenges," he said.

Meanwhile, World Vision International has intensified activities raising awareness on malaria related information among communities in the district through primary school learners in two traditional authorities of Phambala and Ganya.

The message dissemination is being done through quiz competition.

According to World Vision District Manager for Ntcheu and Balaka districts, Limbani Gondwe, primary school learners influence change among communities.

In the meantime, malaria prevalence rate in the district stands at 30%.
