The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) says it is hopeful that many people have taken part in the just ended phase four of the voter registration which closed Wednesday afternoon.

MEC chairperson Dr Jane Ansah told Zodiak Online Wednesday, the commission is satisfied with the overall turn out in many centres.

“Even though there was low turnout in some centres, we’re sure that many people have registered… we anticipate a similar outcome in the fifth phase,” said Dr Ansah.

She said the Commission would release figures of the fourth phase this Friday.

At least 1 million were expected to register in the fourth phase.

The exercise was happening in Ntcheu, Blantyre, Blantyre city, Mwanza and Chikhwawa.

The fifth phase is scheduled to commence on 2 September in Balaka, Neno, Thyolo, Luchenza municipal, Phalombe and Mulanje.
