UTM has downplayed fears that low representation of northern region in the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) will impact the party negatively as it prepares for the 2019 Tripartite Election.

The party’s newly-elected Director of Publicity, Dr. Joseph Chidanti Malunga, told Zodiak Online on Tuesday that it is not UTM’s intention to divide the party’s followership by regions for it is a national political entity.

Dr. Malunga said that the regional representation in the NEC will have nothing to do with electoral outcome next year.

“This thing about regions is what we in UTM are trying to discourage. You remember that we said that we should not have regional vice presidents because we feel that the moment we segregate areas based on regions, basically we are saying that there is one type of Malawian somewhere and there is another one somewhere,” Chidanti-Malunga said.

“These are the things we need to get out of our minds. We need to take ourselves as just Malawians.”

Political analyst, George Phiri, has since sided with the party on the development, saying the move by UTM counters regionalism within the party.

“I think it will not affect the party in the region because people will understand that they are not voting for a particular person in their region, but they are voting for a person who will lead them to overcome the challenges the country is facing,” Phiri said.

On Monday UTM elected its National Executive Committee at its Convention in Lilongwe, but some quarters fear that the only four members of the Committee from the north would affect the party negatively during next year’s polls.
