Ex- Malawi Defense Force(MDF) soldiers who went for United Nations Peace Keeping Mission in Rwanda during the 1995 Genocide has appealed for Malawi Government to consider their welfare after 26 years without support.

Likoma and Chizumulu Islanders have implored government to consider putting in place measures that will ensure MV Ilala and other boats sailing between the islands and other districts ferry people in line with COVID19 preventive measures.

The strike by the Malawi Shipping Company (MSC) and Malawi Ports Company (MPC) meant to force their employer to adjust their salary upwards has now entered second week.

Staff at the Malawi Shipping Company (MSC) and Malawi Ports Company (MPC) are on strike beginning Thursday forcefully suspending all operations for both passenger and cargo vessels on Lake Malawi.

Likoma residents have cried foul over the absence of an Immigration officer, three days after government assigned him to other duties outside the Island district.

 

For nearly three months now, Likoma district (comprising Likoma and Chisumulu islands on Lake Malawi) has operated without a District Health Officer in office.

Fishermen in Likoma Island have disagreed with government’s fresh sanction for a complete ban of the use of prohibited fishing nets on Lake Malawi.
