The Parliamentary Committee on Environmental Affairs and Climate Change has decried duty exemption on government and certain non-governmental entities’ vehicles.

Chairperson for the Committee, Werani Chilenga, says the policy is a setback in eliminating carbon emission in the country.

Chilenga says his committee will engage other parliamentary committees to lobby for an imposition of tax on everyone in an effort to fight climate change.

“We feel it is not right for those with only personal vehicles to be paying the tax when others are not. Everyone should be paying. Everyone is polluting. You may wish to know that you and me may be using a small Corolla which is polluting less than a Prado which government may be using. It should not be that way.

“We are going to sit down with ministry of finance and ministry of natural resources, energy and mining. We also want to engage our colleagues in the committee of finance and budget so that we could do it jointly,” he said.

However, Chilenga commended government for introducing carbon tax in the country in a bid to deal with carbon emission.
