Transport and General Workers Union Representative Emmanuel Wisiki told Zodiak online on Thursday that they will not relent until their grievances are resolved.

"There is nothing that has changed since we started striking, we will continue suspending the marine services unless our concerns are addressed. We want our salaries to rise from the minimum of 40, 000 kwacha per month," he said.

Malawi Shipping Company (MSC) and Malawi Ports Company (MPC) are under the management of Mota Engil.

Wisiki confided in Zodiak Online that Mota Engil has obtained an injunction, which they are yet to be served stopping the strike, according to their sources, assertions Mota Engil spokesperson Thomas Chafunya expressed ignorance of.

"I am still waiting for an update from the management. About the injunction, I am not aware," he said. 

The absence of the public marine transport has put the islander’s lives at risk as they are being forced to use local boats which are not ideal considering the effects of Mwera winds on the lake currently 

The two-week long strike means the only passenger vessel on Lake Malawi is MV Illala is still not operating, a situation that has affected all economic activities on the Island making it difficult for the Islanders to access essential items such as food, medical items and fuel among others.
