Attempts by President Peter Mutharika to remove the country’s Chief Justice days before Tuesday’s presidential elections have attracted widespread condemnation from both local and international rights and legal bodies.

The height of the Frey dissenting voice was a street protest by lawyers in the country who demanded judicial independence.

Latest to condemn the actions of the executive is UN rapporteur on the independence of Judges Diego Garcia Sayan.

Mr. Sayan tweeted yesterday ‘when the rule of law is at risk, our voices must be heard’. And lauded his support for the chief justice.

Meanwhile, the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI) in a statement co-signed by two co- chairpersons Micheal Kirby and Anne Ramberg says the body is deeply concerned that the current climate of threats to Malawi’s judicial independence represents a clear contravention to its essential international human rights law obligations.

The organization urges President Mutharika to respect the judiciary and the courts and allow the legal process to take its course without hindrance and delay.

Chief justice Andrew Nyirenda was among Supreme Court judges who upheld a Constitutional court ruling that nullified President Mutharika’s election in May and ordered for fresh election.

Following the memo from the Chief Secretary, a high court granted a stay order against the actions of the chief secretary.
