The analytical report is on how Sexual Orientation and Gender Identities are perceived in Malawi’s Education and Health policies.

The report, for example, says Chapter IV, section 20 prohibits discrimination of any form. But the law does not explicitly mention “Sexual Orientation” as a prohibited ground for discrimination.

Ironically, sexual minorities in Malawi face a number of human rights abuses.

As a result, they hustle to access medical treatment and are also exposed to infections like HIV and Aids.

And according to the report, these are fueled by social prejudice, exclusion, marginalization, stigmatization, and officially sanctioned discrimination and legal persecution.

In Education, the report has noticed that the reviewed Education Act in 2013, stipulates that Education in Malawi, should be free for all people irrespective of any disability, ethnicity, or gender. But it is not the case.

Center for Development of the People, Cedep, Program Manager Rodney Chalera said activists would like to see policies corresponding with what is on the ground.

"We want policies to be talking to each other. And, we will continue lobbying stakeholders to ensure that human rights that are in the constitution benefit all,” said Chalera.

Chairperson for the Education, Science and Technology Committee of Parliament Bennex Kaisi noted that there is a need for the country to be inclusive.

The report was launched by the Center for the Development of People and Action Hope Malawi.
