President Chakwera said however visionary leaders could be, backbiting foils their efforts.

He called on Malawians to emulate the good example of hard work and sacrifice that the founding father of this nation late Kamuzu Banda set in his 30-year rule.

Earlier during the commemoration activities, a representative of Kamuzu Family, Ken Kandondo asked government to consider constructing a library and a museum on Kamuzu mausoleum where people would learn more about the first president of this nation.

“When Professor Bingu wa Mutharika unveiled this mausoleum, he said he wanted to build a museum and a library here where people can come and get information about the founding father of our nation. It is this call that I extend to government this time around,” said Kandondo

Minister of Tourism Wildlife and Culture, Dr. Micheal Usi said his ministry will consider the request.

“We will consider the request to keep the history of Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda alive,” said Dr. Usi.

One of the individuals who worked closely with late Kamuzu Banda and represented Leader of Opposition in Parliament at the birthday commemoration, Nicholas Dausi said the day is exceptional for Malawi as a nation.

“I worked with Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda for some years and coming here to remember him shows a commitment that our party, democratic Progressive Party DPP has been making to remember the founding father of the nation,” said Dausi.

Late Kamuzu Banda who was given the title ‘Ngwazi’ died on November 25 in 1997. He ruled Malawi from 1964 to 1994.
