The Concerned Elderly people told Zodiak they are living a miserable life.

"Life is very rough for us, we are keeping orphans but we are struggling to find food, clothes, beddings among other basic needs," said the Elderly.

The Elderly People in three districts of Dedza, Chikwawa, and Ntcheu claim they are sidelined in poverty alleviating programs despite being vulnerable.

They told Zodiak Online that government is delaying introducing the old pension scheme they were promised during the campaign.

Senior Groups Huwa and Kabulika of Dedza told Zodiak Online most Elderly are weak to work, they are struggling in villages hence the need for government to fast track the process of introducing their scheme.

"The elderly are living a painful life, they are lacking good houses, food, clothes, beddings, and this scheme will help them if introduced," said the chiefs.

GVH Timbenawo and Group Village Chithumba of Chikwawa also told Zodiak Online that the Elderly are keeping orphans but they lack a lot of basic needs a development that is affecting the welfare of the children too.

"Government should introduce the pension scheme as soon as possible, the elderly are living a painful life, they are affected psychologically and some are dying in villages," said Chikwawa chiefs.

Deputy Director Responsible for Elderly Affairs Gideon Kachingwe said the ministry is in the process of developing a social pension scheme for the elderly to address the challenges they are facing

Currently, Malawi has 859 thousand Elderly people.
