Mobile Phone Sector in Slow Growth
The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority, (MACRA) says it has received only one new mobile phone licence application since 2020.
The application was from Malcel, Zodiak understands.
MACRA Communications Officer Bright Sonani told Zodiak Online the slow growth of the sector could be a result of financial challenges needed to invest in the business.
He observes most of the newly introduced mobile phone operators are failing to break through in the industry currently dominated by Airtel and TNM.
According to Sonani, currently the country has six mobile phone operators: Airtel, TNM, MTL, Access Communications, Nyasa mobile and Malcel.
