UTM president, Saulos Chilima, has written Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) on the bills incurred during the elections case as lawyers for Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president, Lazarus Chakwera, are still assessing the costs.

Chilima’s lead lawyer, Dr. Chikosa Silungwe, says it is, however, premature to make public the bill now.

“We have written lawyers for MEC; as of today [Wednesday] they still haven’t responded to us. When they respond, we will update the nation on what the response is.

“In the event that we haven’t agreed on the bill, then we will file papers before the registrar for assessment,” he said.

One of Chakwera’s lawyers, Titus Mvalo, says it is a huge task to assess the costs in the case that started in May last year.

“We are literally working everyday including weekends. Probably by Monday next week we could be getting some indication of what we have agreed,” he said.

The two petitioners in the presidential elections case are following a court order to have their bills footed by the second respondent, MEC.

The court ordered MEC to foot the costs to the petitioners who won the case within 14 days.

Chilima and Chakwera were challenging the 2019 presidential elections results that went in favor of the incumbent president, Peter Mutharika.

The high court sitting as a constitutional court in Lilongwe, however, on Monday nullified the elections and ordered a run-off in 150 days, citing massive irregularities.
