The Agricultural Development Marketing Corporation (ADMARC) says it will not start buying maize from farmers now as moisture content is still high.

ADMARC Spokesperson, Agness Chikoko Ndovi, who said the body is ready to purchase about 800 thousand tons of maize this year, may start buying after two weeks or so to allow the crop to dry.

‘Our officers were already on the ground to inspect the crop and have observed that the moisture content is still high and other areas are still experiencing rains,” said Chikoko Ndovi.

She added that the Corporation is also training officers who will be buying the crop in order to have smooth dealings.

However, some farmers mainly from the southern region, have pleaded with the corporation to avoid further delays as vendors are already on the ground.

One of the farmers from Phalombe, Mr. Moses Kathumba, said some farmers have already started selling their products to vendors as they do not have alternatives.

“We get our daily upkeeps from sales of this produces, so we cannot keep them for a longtime. Now because of this delay by ADMARC, vendors are buying our maize at K100 per kilogram which is stealing,” worried Kathumba.
