Minister Faults Consultant on Thyolo-Thekerana-Muona Road

Transport minister Jacob Hara has faulted consultants for some technical disparities in designing Thyolo-Thekerani-Muona-Makhanga road which has affected implementation of the project on the ground.

Speaking to Zodiak on Monday, Minister Hara, while revealing that government intends to establish Unit in the ministry to test the quality of designs and consultants, said some avoidable corners on the road emanated from the improper designing which was done by Bua Consultants.

When he toured the road and Ruo railway bridge in Nsanje last month, Minister Hara said that he would engage contractor Mota Engil and Bua consultant because the road has many avoidable corners.

"The problem was the consultants themselves. They did not do good designing; it was not properly done. So, the contractor had said what they were doing is what they were instructed to do by the Consultant. We found fault with the Consultant," Hara said.

Meanwhile, Hara has revealed that government is planning to establish the Unit in the ministry of transport to test the quality of designs and consultants to ensure high standards of public infrastructure in the country.

However, speaking in Lilongwe on Tuesday when he met stakeholders in the road construction industry, President Lazarus Chakwera also expressed concerns over poor designs of the country's roads, saying have become the laughing stock in the SADC region.

Among others, Chakwera ordered the ministry of transport to ensure that consultants are designing high standards roads to equal others in the SADC region.

Currently, the physical progress of the 83 kilometres Thyolo-Thekerani-Muona-Makhanga road is at 92%.

A 32-billion-kwacha road commenced in August 2016 and was expected to complete in August 2019, but was extended to April 2022.
