The situation is forcing surrounding pregnant women to carry water to deliver at the facility as nurses use torches and candles to assist the women at night.

A 26-year-old, Linda Petro and a 24-year-old, Chifundo Thamando of Sekeni village in Lundu area told Zodiak on Wednesday that authorities need to come in fast to restore their dignity.

“Our facility was closed for a week because it was heavily flooded which eventually damaged several items. The hospital has no water and electricity and we therefore ask authorities to assist us, so that we give birth in a favorable environment,” said the women.

Health authorities there have told us the facility is now open although there is no power and water.

A Nurse and Midwife Technician, Esnart Lokoma, echoed the concerns saying the flooding caused many pregnant women to deliver in homes as it was hard to visit the facility which was also severely affected.

Meanwhile, Deputy Country Representative of the United Nations Population Fund, Masaki Watabe has promised to rehabilitate the facility in order to safeguard the rights of women and adolescents.

Apart from causing damage in health facilities, the devastating floods also destroyed houses, schools and cut off roads.

Currently, hundreds of flood survivors are living in camps where many of them are still struggling to get food.
