In a move to make sure there is peaceful coexistence between communities in Mangochi district, despite differences in affiliations, Centre for Social Concern (CfSC) has launched a 'conflict barometer' to assist in conflict prevention.

CfSC programs officer, Tobias Jere, said they have recruited monitors two within each Area Development Committees (ADCs) in areas the organization is working, who will record conflicts happening in the areas.

Jere, who was speaking Thursday in the district during a meeting with religious leaders as part of a three-year- interreligious dialogue program CfSC is implementing, said after every quarter, the organization will meet with the leaders to discuss most issues registered and find solutions.

"These monitors will observe and check what is happening and we will be compiling, whether it's political, cultural, social economic orreligious conflicts and how they are influencing life in thedistrict," said Jere.

Chairperson for Pastors fraternal in the district, Pastor Gift Gamaliel, of Pentecostal Assemblies of Malawi thanked the organization for the meeting, saying it will enhance tolerance among religious leaders.

Pastor Gamaliel, also asked other religious leaders to avoid homilies that castigate others, saying such incidences have been sources of conflicts between different religions.

Muslim Association of Malawi Chairperson for Mangochi Chapter, Fahad Kamsuli, agreed with Gamaliel, saying sometimes its religious leaders themselves who start dividing people.

"For sometime now, in Mangochi there has been tolerance between religious leaders, but we have had challenges with guest pastors and sheikhs who do not know how we tolerate here," said Sheikh Kamsuli.

CfSC has a preferential option for the poor and believes that the poor, the less privileged and the vulnerable members of the society must have the most urgent moral claim on the conscience of the nation and according to the organization, this can only be realised when their is peace.
