FOM Responds to Cyclone Freddy in Mulanje

Friends of Mulanje (FOM) on Saturday joined a trail of individuals and organizations that are responding to Cyclone Freddy disaster in Mulanje district.

The group which comprise different professionals and businesspersons within Mulanje and beyond distributed plastic buckets, cups and plates, cloths and black sheets for rebuilding to Freddy survivors in Traditional Authority Njema at the foot of Mulanje Mountain.

FOM Vice Secretary Clifton Munyowa told Zodiak Online that as citizens they thought it necessary to assist the survivors realizing that they lost everything during the disaster.

He also said the group received some cash and items from people who are not members of FOM to help the affected people.

He valued the whole donation at K3.5 million.

One of the recipients of the items Tonnex Chapata from Mujiwa village where almost 90% of the houses were washed away by the flush foods shed tears as he narrated how he survived the disaster though with bruises.

“We left everything and ran for our dear lives to Nanchidwa Primary School where we are seeking shelter until now but my wife lost six members of her family including her father,” said Chapata.

He thanked FOM for the donation.

Traditional Authority Njema who also thanked Friends of Mulanje for the support told Zodiak Online that more support is needed to the affected households as most affected families they literary have nothing.

According to FOM Chairperson Ken Chilewe, the group will continue mobilizing resources and continue assisting the affected households as the impact of this Cyclone Freddy is so huge.
