A Mulanje based Non-Governmental Organization, PAK Foundation on Thursday launched a back to school initiative in Traditional Authority Juma in Mulanje district.

PAK Foundation Director, Patricia Kaliati who is also Secretary General of UTM told Zodiak Online that in this initiative, they have started with 1000 children.

"It pains me when I see children mainly girls dropping out of school because of poverty and this forced me to come up with this initiative and some needy secondary school children will be provided with school fees," said Kaliati.

She asked the parents to encourage their children to work hard in their studies if they are to break the poverty cycle in their families.

During the launch of the initiative, the organization with support from Lukalazi Development Foundation which is based in Mzimba distributed school uniforms, shoes and Likuni phala to 320 children.

Director of Lukalazi Development Foundation Omega Kaunda told Zodiak Online that their areas of focus are education, health and agriculture.

Head teacher of Khwalala Primary School Brighton Mbetewa thanked the two organizations for responding to the school dropout challenge.

"Child marriages and teen pregnancies are common in this area and the root cause to these problems is poverty such that some parents cannot afford to provide their children with basic scholastic materials like uniforms, pens, note books and soap," said Mbetewa.

Later, the two organizations visited farmers at Namulenga irrigation scheme where they donated four bags of fertilizer to the farmers.
