Internet service provider, Bengolnet Ltd, has installed free Wi-Fi at Sunnyside township where the company is premised in Blantyre.

Managing director for the company, Mohammad Zafar, says this is part of the social responsibility which he says the company believes in giving back to the communities.

“Anybody can come and enjoy the Wi-Fi. It is 24 hours and unlimited. Of course, there will be some limits when users want to use sites such as porn. For study and other sites such as google will be open.

“This is a step which we have taken as people who are doing business to return to Malawians. If we are doing our business in Malawi and we are not taking any responsibility, we feel that it is not good,” he said.

Mohammad says the development is a pilot project which will be spread over to other districts and benefit people in the rural areas.

“Some families may not afford to send all their children to high schools. Some are selling their livestock to send their children to school. They are getting their education without ICT knowledge.

“When those students complete their education and come to the outside world, they will not be able to compete with their fellows. This free Wi-Fi will make a little difference to such students,” he said.
