Police in Neno district say they are still keeping an elderly man at Zalewa roadblock for three weeks now after an angry mob wanted to kill him at Kasamba village in the area of Senior Chief Symon on suspicion that he killed his grandson through magic.

Neno police publicist Austin Kamwendo has told Zodiak Online on Monday that the elderly man, Binwell Chabwera has been staying with his grandson since his childhood but on the 26th of August he died suddenly after a short illness.

"We received a report from members of the Community Policing Forum that an angry mob was attacking an elderly person on suspicion that he had a hand in the death of his grandson son, Chiyembekezo Byson who died after a short illness," said Kamwendo.

Kamwendo further said that this prompted the main Neno police station to sanction their Zalewa roadblock police counterparts, who are near the place of incident, to rush to the scene where they managed to rescue the defenseless senior citizen.

According to the police, the village Headman where the person comes from say they cannot welcome back the granny, speculating that this is not the first time for a person to die in such a manner in the village and they suspect the victim of having a hand.

But the police publicist is strongly warning people against calling people witches saying this is punishable by law hence there must be a stop to this vice.

He said that “the nation must be informed that calling anybody a witch is a crime and is unforgivable one. Anyone found doing this shall be prosecuted and jailed to send a warning to other people with similar minds".

Meanwhile, the police is calling on elderly homes institutions to come to their help saying they are failing to feed the man due to financial constraints.

They say their budget is not enough to sustain the man hence their call while stressing that his home village is still hostile.

The victim is often seen wondering about the busy Zalewa roadblock trading centre which the police fear might end his life due to massive traffic at the checkpoint where he is also seen sitting idle.

Neno district is common with unfounded accusations of Witchcraft practices especially during the rainy season where lightning strikes kill people.
