A year after irate communities torched Bvumbwe police sub-station in Thyolo, stakeholders have launched a resource mobilization drive to reconstruct the police structures.

Station Executive Committee (SEC) chairperson, Billy Masoakutali said on Wednesday that a Bill of Quantity (BoQ) from the Malawi Police Service (MPS) pegged the project at K150 million and currently communities have mobilized a heap of sand and about K600, 000.

"Chiefs have mobilized their subjects to fetch sand while the business community and others have so far contributed about K600, 000. As we plan for a stand-alone police station, the resource mobilization committee has also sought assistance from the surrounding estates and others to contribute towards the construction materials," he said.

Parliamentarian for the area-Thyolo North, Ephraim Naija says the community members are geared for the project to ensure ownership.

"The initiative is aimed at restoring security lapses and ensuring community ownership to the public infrastructure. There have been growing incidents of murder, theft and even mob justice," he said.

Limbe police Officer In-charge, Deputy Commissioner, Gladson Chipumphula has cherished the gesture, corroborating that "an assessment by the MPS Building Section recommended that the structures needed rebuilding due to severe fire".

The Bvumbwe police sub-station was re-opened early this year with few renovated offices.

In January 2022, irate communities torched the police sub-station after a suspect allegedly died in a police cell, a development that degenerated into violent scenes where police reportedly used live bullets and killed two others.
