The Malawi Digital Project says the internet connectivity being installed in government institutions will be configured to ensure no one is accessing illicit sites that promote sex harassment and terrorism.

The project's ICT partnership analyst, Beatrice Kachepa, said the Government Wide Area Network (GWAN) has so far been connected to 200 sites country-wide and expected to complete 500 come December.

Kachepa said this on Wednesday at Luchenza municipal council in Thyolo after sensitizing members of Urban Executive Committee on how internet will be accessed through Boma, Nzika and guest services.

"The public users need to know that the internet connectivity is highly configured to ensure that it is used for the intended purpose. People will not be allowed to share sexual harassment content, abusive content or access any website that is either demeaning, but also is a threat to the security of the country," she stressed.

Through a World Bank funding, Government of Malawi is implementing the Digital Malawi Project to propel the country's digital transformation by harnessing ICT services that will drive economic growth, innovation, job creation and improve access to services.

The municipal council's Chief Executive Officer, Wanyapakucha Mcphine Mzumara believes the internet connectivity will ease their operations.

In the first phase, 500 public places including schools, National Libraries, courts, hospitals, prisons, post offices, National Registration Bureau, markets and airports are being connected to free internet.
