As some 4.4 Malawians are facing hunger this year, a Blantyre based-Nigerian Joel Chidi has expressed need to embrace the spirit of sharing the little with the less-privileged.

Chidi made the appeal on Saturday at Molesi village, Sub-Traditional Authority Kwanjana in Thyolo when he distributed cooked food stuff to 30 elderly and children.

Chidi believes that giving attracts blessings from God.

"It is a blessing to give. I thought of bringing this food here in the village because if you have not eaten, trust me you can't think properly and straight. When you have not eaten, my friend it's very tough," he said.

He has since called on others to come in and assist the vulnerable communities.

"There is more demand as evidenced by the calls here. Food shortage it's a major problem in this nation so the government and donors should help," he added.

Village headman Molesi says hunger is biting hard in the area, where most people are hardly affording a meal a day.

"If you eat once a day here, you are lucky. The hunger situation is worse indeed. I am urging other well-wishers and the government need to help us," he said.

Three weeks ago, the government has launched the lean season food distribution exercise in some districts of the country after the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC) report projected that 4.4 million people are facing hunger this year.
