The Neno District Council on Sunday launched its first ever K4 m football and netball league using the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) drawn from Neno North and South constituencies.

The league, according to its organisers, aims to get Neno known to the rest of the country and make its sporting activities competitive.

Speaking during the launch, Neno North constituency member of parliament Thoko Tembo urged the competing teams to display sportsmanship and help to develop Neno sports through competing at regional leagues.

He said that this league will also help the youths to showcase their talents for possible scouting by reginal teams.

"I thought of launching this league which shall be played in all the ten zones and from there we shall take the champions to compete for the final phase of the league", said Tembo.

He however warned the competing teams against any display of unsportsman-like behavior saying the aims is to promote sports and keep the youths busy and withdraw them from unruly behaviors.

In his remarks, Neno District Youth officer Ian Sukali asked well-wishers to connect water in Neno stadium so that its pitch is watered and be able to host big games.

He said that "we need water here so that this ground is up to standard, we had the pipes blocked and some developed lusts hence our call for partners to help with. We have limited resources as a council".

But Tembo has asked for a quotation for the project saying he will look with great interest into the matter to ensure that the youths of Neno familiarise themselves with good things for easy display of talent when outside the district.

Sukali, however thanked the two members of parliament, thus, Thoko Tembo from Neno North and Mark Katsonga Phiri of Neno South for putting aside two million Kwacha each from his Constituency Development Fund.

Neno District Football Association chairperson Clement Chabisala while commending the two MP's for the gesture, has called for resources to revamp the dead Neno Giants football club which was representing the district in the Premier Division.

He said that as of now, the district has no strong team and hopes to build one from the champions of the Zones and winners and runners up of the main league finals.

Meanwhile, Director of Planning and Development at the council Charles Lomoni has disclosed that the council will soon launch women's football as it is now proving to be more attractive than it was before.

In the next league, different sporting disciplines shall be introduced in a bid to incorporate everyone.

Winners of the main league finals will pocket home six hundred thousand Kwacha.
