Wife to the late Chakuamba, Grace Mhango, told Zodiak Online that the current administration apart from promising to finalise the mausoleum, it had also promised not to neglect the family's social and economic needs.

"This is yet to be honoured however. I am currently destitute at the moment. I was even evicted from a Malawi Housing apartment I was living in Manja township in Blantryre as I would not afford to pay rentals," said Mhango.

She added that it would be ironic for the government to proceed and spend millions in construction a mausoleum for late Chakuamba when members of his family are living in destitute.

Meanwhile, government spokesperson, Moses Kumkuyu while he could not dismiss the assertions has asked for more time to check on appropriate policy direction regarding the matter.

However, Social Commentator Wonderful Mkhutche says the government is not obliged in any way to look after the affairs of the departed politician despite his immense contribution to the society.

Ministry of local government officials had earlier this year retaliated government's position to overhaul the mausoleum construction project initiated by the previous Democratic Progressive (DPP) regime which already spent about K15 million on the initial construction.
