The Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC) has commended the Malawi Police Service for the arrest of some people who are being suspected of being behind the obstruction of the presidential convoy week.

HRCC chairperson Robert Mkwezalamba has told Zodiak Online today that the arrest of the suspect who threw an object at the passing convoy is commendable and believes justice will be served to warn others.

"We want to commend the Malawi Police Service for arresting the suspect although we know that people might not be arrested since they acted in a crowd," said Mkwezalamba.

Mkwezalamba further argues that with the 2025 tripartite elections approaching, such acts if left unattended to, would be a recipe for disaster and affect the credibility of the elections.

President Chakwera's convoy was obstructed en route to Chileka airport at HHI as mourners wanted the presidential convoy to stop to pave way for a funeral procession of the late Saleta Phiri's wife.

The incident was preceded by a number of some top police officers being transferred which the police service said were normal transfers.

The president was on his way to Chileka airport to board a flight to the Democratic Republic of the Congo to attend the swearing in ceremony of president-elect Felix Tshisekedi for his second term in office.
