Govt Steps Up Awareness on Bamboo Farming

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate Change has intensified awareness campaigns for communities to venture into giant bamboo farming across the country.

Deputy director for the department of forestry Ted Kamoto told Zodiak Online on that the campaigns follow the failure of some bamboos to grow when planted in some parts of the country.

Kamoto said a lot of people were given bamboo seedlings but failed to ably grow them.

He attributed this to lack of awareness about suitable land for bamboo farming, among the farmers.

"We have embarked on awareness campaigns to ensure farmers have adequate knowledge on bamboo farming besides knowing the size of land farmers want to plant," said Kamoto.

While commending the authorities for the steps taken, environmental activist Mathews Malata says the awareness would have been done before distribution of the seedlings to save resources.

Environmentalists feel that embracing giant bamboo farming could significantly avert deforestation in the country as they can be used for charcoal production and timber, among others.
