MAREP 9 Connects 120 Sites; Bemoans Encroachment of Power Line Paths
The Ministry of Energy has covered 160 sites with 120 connected to the grid out of the targeted 434 under the Malawi Rural Electrification Program (MAREP) Phase 9.
However, the ministry’s energy officer Austin Theu told Zodiak Online on Tuesday that encroachment of the power line paths is affecting progress of the program, especially in the Southern Region.
Theu said the ministry, in partnership with district councils and the ministry of lands, conducted way leave assessment and compensated affected individuals besides sensitizing communities.
"Despite all the procedures some individuals have encroached power line paths and consequently denying contractors access to erect structures," said Theu.
Meanwhile, social commentator Ceasor Kondowe has described the tendency as unfortunate, urging local development structures to work with officials to address the problem.
Kondowe added that the tendency is detrimental to the development of the energy sector, calling on the relevant authorities to swiftly intervene on the issue.
