The sentences will run concurrently from the date of conviction, 13th October 2020.

The charge of abuse of office carries a maximum sentence of 12 years imprisonment but High Court Judge Chifundo Kachale handed Mussa and Kwanjana a similar sentence of a total of 5 years in jail.

In his ruling, Chifundo Kachale told the court that the two have been disqualified to hold any public office for the next 7years. 

In his reaction state prosecutor, Kamudoni Nyasulu expressed satisfaction with the ruling stating that it will act as a deterrent to other would-be offenders especially public officers.

However, defense counsel Paul Maulidi says his team plans to appeal the running by next week citing injustices.

Zodiak understands the defense counsel has applied for a suspended sentence which the court rejected on grounds that the two officers were aware of what they were doing based on their arguments in court.

Meanwhile, Judge Kachale has also ordered that all certificates and passports issued to all dependants be revoked.

Mussa 55, was a cabinet minister during the two-year tenure of President Dr. Joyce Banda between April 2012 and May 2014.
