Bilira Students to Foot Bill for School Destruction

Bilira Students to Foot Bill for School Destruction

A day after a fracas forced closure of Bilira Community Day Secondary in Ntcheu, classes have resumed with an order that students who were involved in the vandalism should shoulder the cost of maintenance of the facility.

The students vandalized the school after reports that one student-teacher (from Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Luanar)) had an affair with a girl.

“Management and the school committee agreed that the students who were involved should share cost of damage done,” said school head-teacher, Boniface Malunga.

Malunga, however, said this would be after investigations, into what happened and who was involved, are concluded.

“The situation has normalized. A few students turned up for classes,” he said.

Among the things that were destroyed on school campus are an administration block, a teacher’s house and the school hall where windows were broken.

Three students were also arrested in connection with the incident and they were charged with causing malicious damage.
