Msundwe “Rape” Victims Need Psychological Help-Mrs Chakwera

Wife to Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Monica Chakwera has said victims of the Msundwe rape allegations need counseling to recover from the shocking experience owing to the harsh treatment they suffered at the hands of police.

During her visit to Msundwe and Mpingu Trading Centres Tuesday, Mrs. Chakwera observed that the victims of the alleged rape by police officers in the area are still traumatized.

Mrs. Chakwera said, “What happened should not have happened, especially by men in uniform who are supposed to protect the people. If they are professionals, they should not have done that.”

During the visit, Mrs. Chakwera, who donated various assorted items to the victims, appealed to well-wishers to support people who lost their property and business during the October 8 fracas.

She also promised to engage different stakeholders to ensure the victims receive proper psychological help.

“We brought in professional counselors to try to help the victims forget the tragedy that befell them and we will not stop here until they fully recover,” she said.

One of the block leaders at Msundwe, Vaison Chamkoma, commended Mrs. Chakwera for her gesture.

It is alleged that police officers who were deployed to restore order at Msundwe, a day after angry people stoned to death police superintendent Usuman Imedi, raped women and girls in apparent retribution.

Police are investigating the matter, but different stakeholders have raised the concern with the involvement of police officers in the investigations and want independent bodies to be involved in the probe for credible results.
