Heavy Rains Damage Edingeni CDSS Structures

Heavy rains with strong winds have blown off roofs of Edingeni Community Day Secondary School structures and an unspecified number of houses around Edingeni in the area of Inkosi ya Makosi Mmbelwa in Mzimba district on Saturday evening destroying a lot of property in the process.

Chimwemwe Chisi a teacher at  Edingeni CDSS the rains has damaged property including 21 computers, books and other teaching and learning materials. 

"The heavy rains have caused a lot of damage, the roof to one block which consists of a laboratory, a library and a staff room have been blown away," highlighted Chisi.

Chisi said a lot of teaching and learning materials have also been rendered unusable as they were soaked in water from the heavy downpour.

"We have also lost about 21 computers which we were using at the school," said Chisi.

He described this as a big blow considering that schools are reopening on Monday and teachers are clueless on where they will start.

An eye witness Mathews Nyirenda said the heavy downpour which was accompanied by heavy winds has also rendered a number of families destitute after the roofs to their houses were blown off. 

"I can't say how many houses have been affected but its a number of them," explained Nyirenda.

Meanwhile, Faith Longwe a Relief and Rehabilitation Officer for the disaster office in Mzimba has confirmed the development saying the office will make assessments on the extent of the damage on Monday.

"We can confirm about the disaster at Edingeni in the area of Inkosi ya Makosi Mmbelwa but as an office we will be in the area on Monday to make assessments on the magnitude of the damage and what kind of a response is needed," said Longwe

Meanwhile, a man was struck by lightning near Mzimba prison during the rains that fell around the boma on Friday afternoon.

The heavy rains started falling in parts of Mzimba district on Friday afternoon.
