A Mzuzu University-based tourism expert has warned that the country’s tourism sector may collapse due to several governance issues the sector is facing.

Deputy Dean at the faculty of tourism at the University, Mathews Lambulira has told us that as a result, for example, the country is failing to implement policies that can help to woe international tourists who bring in forex that can change the dynamics of the sector.

``The problem is that Malawi is failing to invest in this sector. Tourism is very expensive. But the country has done so little in improving infrastructure like roads,” says Lambulira.

This comes at a time when Malawi and the countries that are under the UN, celebrate International Tourism Day on 27 September, every year. And September is Malawi’s tourism month.

Lambulira has also suggested that there is a need to restructure the whole Ministry of Tourism to make it effective.

Said Lambulira: ``Government should reposition employees in tourism attraction districts. The industry wants professional people should be managing the affairs of tourism in such places.”

Minister of Tourism Michael Usi has acknowledged challenges facing the sector but says government is doing something to revamp the industry.

``Covid-19 has affected the entire world. But what we are doing now is that we are concentrating on domestic tourism so that when the world opens up, they should find us very ready,” says Usi.

Countries under the UN started celebrating International World Tourism Day in 1980. The purpose of the 27th September celebration every year is to raise awareness of the role of tourism within the international community and to demonstrate how it affects social, cultural, political, and economic values worldwide.
