Lieutenant General Davis Mtachi, said this Tuesday at the end of a four-month long Sergeant Majors’ course at the Malawi Armed Forces College-Mafco in Salima district.
Mtachi said the role of non-commissioned officers is confined to building moral courage of non-commissioned officers when giving instructions to soldiers on behalf of commissioned officers.
“When officers are not available, non-commissioned officers take up the commanding instructions to soldiers. The inclusion of female soldiers is a boost to promoting women in this area,” he said.
Meanwhile, best allied student from Nigerian Army, Warrant Officer Abdulmumin Tijjan, says he will put to good use the leadership skills acquired during the training in Malawi.
“My plan was to be the best. There is a lot of leadership skills I have acquired here especially being a servant leader,” Tijjan said.
The Sergeant Majors’ Course is the 8th. It attracted 16 international Non Commissioned Officers drawn from Nigeria, Rwanda, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Lesotho, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya and 25 from the host Malawi.
Malawi Defense Force has since 2014, been training these officers to address existing gaps in leadership development and professional military education between non-commissioned and commissioned officers.
