She said this when the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations handed over 306 motorcycles and 7 vehicles to the ministry of Agriculture.

“Malawi cannot develop if it continues to do business as usual. We must modernize how we work,” said Torres.

On his part Acting Chief of Cooperation for the European Union, one of the funders of the donation, Jose Medina said the donation will ensure that extension workers now provide services to a larger population as they were struggling to do so due to mobility challenges.

“We have quickly realized how limited mobility hampers the precious work of the front-line workers. It is in response to this major challenge that the EU funded programmes include also a conspicuous package of cars, motorbikes and bicycles,” said Medina.

Minister of Agriculture Robin Lowe said the donation will support the ministry in implementation of the Growth Development Strategy MDGS Ⅲ and the National Agriculture Investment Plan (NAIP)

“The motor vehicles and motorcycles are aimed at facilitating interventions being implemented for food, nutrition and income security for Malawians. This is in line with Government Vision of Food security and economic empowerment for citizens,” said Lowe.

Of the 306 motorcycles, 28 are going to the ministry of health for the Afikepo programme which addresses malnutrition particularly in under 5 children.
