Chiwanda Family Demands Compensation

The family of a 10-year-old girl, Ellen Chawanda, who was killed by a security dog at Crossroads complex in Lilongwe has written a letter demanding compensation from the security company and owners of the premises where the incident occurred.

Family lawyer Gift Katundu has confirmed the development to Zodiak Online, adding that their aim is to ensure justice prevails in the matter.

According to Katundu, the compensation is for loss of life, loss of dependence, and the deceased's sister is also suing the security company for nervous shock she suffered at the sight of the incident.

"We are currently hunting for all those connected to the death of Ellen...owners of the dog and the owners of premises where this occurred,” Katundu added.

Center for Human Rights and Rehabilitation executive director Michael Kaiyatsa has hailed the family for taking such a step to seek justice.

Ellen died a shocking and violent death. A vicious security dog mauled her as she and her sister innocently walked home from visiting a relative at Maula Prison.
