On 21 July, 2020, EGENCO Chief Executive Officer, William Liabunya, told energy minister, Newton Kambala that ESCOM owes them over K50 billion in tariffs.
He said this when the minister visited Tedzani Power Station in Mwanza.
Liabunya said the debt has been affecting their operations such as construction of Tedzani 4 Hydro-electricity Station.
In August this year, Vice president Saulos Chilima rejected ESCOM a bail out and ordered the utility body to make a staggered payment.
Chilima ordered ESCOM to pay back K1.7 billion of the K53 billion kwacha debt by 31 December 31, 2020.
To date, Malawians are yet to know how much money has been paid back from the debt.
Zodiak Online has been engaging officials from the two bodies on the matter for over a month now but to no avail.
