1, 600 St. Kizito Pupils Sit on Floor
The learners have called on government to come to their rescue

A donation of face masks by Malawi Gaming Board to St Kizito Boys Primary School in Blantyre has exposed a myriad challenges rocking education system in the country.
About 1, 600 learners of a total of 1, 700 learners sit on the floor, prompting them to ask government to come in and provide them with desks.
Some Standard 8 learners, Louis Mota and Hamza Makwati, have asked government and development partners to provide them with desks to promote quality education.
The learners say that out of 1, 700 pupils, only 101 Standard 8 learners sit on desks which they say is very unfair.
“This school is in the city and we need to have better learning facilities and materials. Imagine, the whole school, only Standard 8 learners sit on the desk,” complained the learners.
They were speaking after Malawi Gaming Board donated face masks at the school to protect the learners from catching Covid-19.
Spokesperson for the Board, Mirriam Kumbuyo, asked the learners to concentrate on their studies.
“We have been distributing face masks in various schools to protect the children from COVID-19. We therefore encourage learners to work hard in class,” said kumbuyo.
Kumbuyo added that they are expecting to hold artist week soon to provide some resources to selected artist groups and individuals to cushion them in the wake of COVID19.
