Police in Thyolo have arrested 14 people for damaging Khonjeni Police Unit, vehicle and slashing down maize crops.

South East Police Region Spokesperson, Rodrick Maida, has told Zodiak that the arrests follow an incident which happened two days ago where the suspects went to Khonjeni Police to demand that a woman Brenda Maxwell 26, should explain the real cause of death of her husband Thomas Maseya 35, of Mikate village in Traditional Authority Kapichi in Thyolo who had hanged himself to a tree.

"On January 28, 2022, Khonjeni Police unit received a report that Thomas Maseya, had died after committing suicide. Then on January, 2, 2022 after the burial, relatives of the deceased and some community members from Mikate village, stormed Khonjeni police unit demanding that wife to the deceased Brenda Maxwell aged 26, of Salubeni village in Traditional Authority Kapichi in the district, should explain the real cause of the death," Maida said.

He says as officers were reasoning with them, they turned violent where they started stoning the office, thereby smashing 26 window glasses and driver's side glass of the vehicle for Luchenza police.

Maida added: “The angry mob also stormed Maxwell's home village- Salubeni and demolished five houses, stealing property, before slashing down maize crops in some targeted gardens.”

Meanwhile, South East Region Police officers invaded Mikate village in the wee hours of today and managed to arrest 14 suspects.

According to Maida, while denouncing mob justice says police are expected to make arrests as investigations are still in progress.
