The absence of Malawi from the 16th edition of the World Intellectual Property Organization, (WIPO) Global Innovation Index 2023 report has caused an uproar from some sectors in the country.

Others are suggesting that Malawi needs to take matters of innovation seriously.

a- Tech-expert and entrepreneur, Wisely Phiri says this is an indication that Malawi has not been marketing itself vigorously.

But social commentator Victor Chipofya Jnr sees this as lack of political will to advance Malawi’s innovation.

Minister of Information and Digitisation, Moses Kunkuyu  told us that he is yet to see the report which has evaluated 132 countries on their innovative capabilities.

According to the report which was launched on Wednesday, Switzerland is the world’s most innovative economy, followed by Sweden, the United States, the United Kingdom and Singapore.

On the African continent, Mauritius is leading on 57th position followed by South Africa which has been ranked 59. Botswana is 85th, Cabo Verde 91st and Senegal 93rd.
