The Malawi Council for the Handicapped (MACOHA) has emphasized the need for a shift in mindset regarding how individuals perceive those with various disabilities within their respective communities.

District Rehabilitation Officer for Phalombe, Pius Chilewani, told Zodiak Online Saturday that many individuals tend to overlook those with disabilities when initiating various activities.

Chilewani said persons with disabilities are facing challenges to participate in the implementation of various developmental activities.

"We are appealing to government and stakeholders to ensure that all barriers that hinder persons with disabilities are removed and enhance inclusiveness," said Chilewani.

He spoke this at Nambazo Primary School ground during a disability awareness campaign organized by The Hunger Project Malawi under The Disability Mainstreaming Programme for Food Security and Resilience Strengthening in Malawi.

Vice Chairperson for Phalombe district council, Simon Abraham, has assured people with disabilities in the district that the council will collaborate with stakeholders to prevent the marginalization of individuals with disabilities in development initiatives.

"The council is committed to ensure that persons with disabilities have equal opportunities with others regardless of their status in their respective areas," said Abraham.

The program is being Implemented in the of Traditional authority (TA) Chiwalo in Phalombe District with funding from Christian Blind Mission (CBM).
