Sana Food Court Closed Over Hygiene Issues

The popular Lilongwe eatery Sana Food Court was forced closed Monday on account of failure to meet minimum standards for a ready-to-eat food outlet.

Officials from the ministry of Tourism and Hotels Board ordered the place shut down pointing to poor sanitation and safety as required by the Tourism and Hotels Act.

The action followed complaints from members of the general public about alleged unhygienic conditions.

On inspection, the board found evidence of the alleged flaws hence the decision to seal the place.

Industry, Trade and Tourism minister, Salim Bagus, was personally present during the exercise.

He said such conduct by food outlets has the effect of tarnishing reputation of the tourism industry and that closure of the eatery is a warning to other players in the sector to up their game.

“It’s not only Malawians who patronize this place,” Bagus observed adding;

“Foreigners and tourists bringing forex come here too. If they see that our restaurants are dirty I don’t think they would be happy and willing to patronize the country again and this will have an impact to our economy”.

SANA Restaurant Manager Ali Muhammad said the eatery would quickly work on the areas of concern noting they were only minor.

“We only have some minor issues and they will be rectified,” he Muhammad.

The Tourism and hotels board has since given SANA food court three days to adhere to the recommendations made, failing which the premises will remain closed.
