The High Court in Lilongwe has ordered the Ministry of Sports to pay the 2017 Bingu National Stadium stampede victims money approximately 251 million kwacha in compensation.

Lawyer for the victims Gift Nankhuni confirmed this to us saying the case was concluded on Monday 21st September, 2020.

The tragedy claimed lives of 8, mainly primary school learners with about 48 others injured when they scrambled to enter the stadium gates for the 6 July independence celebrations

On this day thousands rushed for seats ahead of a friendly between top sides Nyasa Big Bullets and Silver Strikers.

Nankhuni is optimistic the money, which will be split among the affected families, will be split among the affected families.
