Three men are in police custody in Kasungu after they were allegedly found in possession of Indian Hemp.

Kasungu Police Station spokesperson, Inspector Harry Namwaza, says the three were arrested on Sunday July 5, 2020 near Nambuma area as police gave chase.

This followed a tip to police about a motor vehicle with the illicit substance on board heading to Santhe.

“Upon receiving the tip off, police officers mounted a snap roadblock…to intercept the alleged motor vehicle.

“The motor vehicle appeared, but upon seeing police officers (the suspects) branched into another unchartered route before it entered the main road where it started cruising… The (police) officers then gave chase,” said Inspector Namwaza.

The suspects are identified as Gift Kwakwala, 24 of Daudi village, traditional authority Khumba in Phalombe, Elick Chibende , 28 of Katsilizika village, traditional authority Kalumbo in Lilongwe and Bonface Phiri, 22 of Kwinda village, traditional authority Khosolo in Mzimba.

In the course of following the motor vehicle, a communication was made to detectives at Kasiya Police Unit who also started following the same and together they managed to intercept the vehicle, Nissan Bongo registration number BS 5539 white in colour close to Nambuma area.

On searching the vehicle, police found aboard eight bags of Indian Hemp and arrested three suspects.

Namwaza said the three will appear in court soon.
