Assessment on damages caused by fire that razed down part of old Limbuli market in Mulanje two weeks ago reveals property worthy K74.1 million was damaged by the inferno.

We have in possession a report signed by District Commissioner, Michael Chimbalanga, showing the fire destroyed 36 shops.

“The fire emanated from an illegally electricity connected shop that developed a short electric circuit and the shop had sachet and plastic bottled spirit beers that aggravated the spread of fire to other shops,” reads the report.

Meanwhile, reconstruction of shops at the same old market is underway and the market chairperson, Anthony Limited, has confirmed this to us.

“Indeed we are reconstructing our shops. This is our farm land and with nothing positive coming from government we cannot just sit down. We need to fend for our families,” said Limited.

In the wee hours of Tuesday, 19th February, 2020 fire broke at old Limbuli market razing down shops that had assorted goods including kitchen plastic utensils, groceries, computers, motorcycles, bicycles and mattresses just to mention a few.

It is not known when the vendors will relocate to the new Limbuli market.
