Child parliamentarian for Mulanje South Constituency Kelvin Magareta has called upon the general public to support the children as they use technological gadgets for their education.

Kelvin who is in Form One at Mulanje Secondary School said digital gadgets in this modern world are crucial in their education.

"We use cellphones, computers and other gadgets for our studies and it’s my plea to my fellow children to use these gadgets for education only and nothing else," said Kelvin.

District Social Welfare Officer for Mulanje Martha Mkisi has asked parents and teachers to monitor the children as they use digital gadgets for their education.

"I urge all child protection players in the district to continue working in collaboration as children mostly girls continue facing various forms of abuses, with defilement topping the list of abuses," said Mkisi.

The two said this on Friday during the Day of African Child in Mulanje.

And one of the partners during the event was International Labour Organization (ILO).

National Coordinator of the ILO's Acceleration Action for the Elimination of Child Labor in supply chain in Africa (ACCEL)-Africa project, Chisomo Kalogwile told Zodiak Online that ILO expects to see child labour eliminated in Mulanje District and Malawi as a whole.

She said this can be achieved through coordinated efforts by Government, workers, employers and other stakeholders.

"ILO through ACCEL-Africa project, continues to support Malawi to sustain interventions towards the elimination all forms of child labour in the tea and coffee supply chains, said Kalogwile.

Day of the African Child is this year being commemorated under the theme, "the rights of the child in this digital environment."
