Collapsed School Shelter Kills 2 Family Members in Thyolo

Two family members, a father and a daughter have died in Thyolo after a school shelter they sought refuge in fell on them.

South East Police Region spokesperson, Edward Kabango has identified them as 62 year-old father, Bora Phaveni and his daughter Alinafe Magomero, 40, while his daughter in-law has survived with minor injuries after a wall of school shelter collapsed on them.

On Friday, December 15, 2023 Bora was accompanied by his daughter Alinafe and his 38 year-old daughter in-law,  Esnart Makayiko on their way from Thyolo Boma back home.

"When they reached Gubudu village at around 19:00 hours, it started raining and the trio sought refuge in one of the school shelters at Suzumira Primary School but unfortunately a wall of the shelter collapsed and the two were pronounced dead at Changata Health Centre while Esnart survived with minor injuries," Kabango said.

Meanwhile, postmortem conducted at the facility has shown that the two died of head injuries.

The deceased hailed from Muwanya village while the survivor comes from Nkhwangwa village, all in the area of Traditional Authority Mbawera in Thyolo.
