The Ministry of Local Government Unity and Culture, has challenged traditional leaders in the country to ensure that they promote discipline and unity in their jurisdictions.

Deputy minister in the ministry Owen Chomanika, says government expects these people to be exemplary rather than being in fore front promoting bad malpractices such as drinking excessively among other things.

"We want leaders who can properly guide their subjects and not those that are corrupt,  those that drink excessively for the bettement of the country," he ssid.

According to Chomanika, the government will not tolerate any misconduct championed by the traditional leaders in the country.

He made the remarks in Ntchisi on Wednesday after installing new Traditional Authority Kalumo in the district.

Ntchisi District Council Chairperson Mark Mphezi Mtengo said the installation of the new tradition leader will aid in accelalating development in the district.

"We believe that he will help the council in promoting development in the district besides guiding his subjects well," said Mtengo.

On his part, the new traditional leader whose real name is Peter Kambvumbula said he will make sure that he abides to the government's plea.

"I will make sure that I follow the instructions given by the government,I have been a village head for so long and I know what people want from their leaders so I am confident that I will make it," he said.

The new traditional leader, has taken over the position after his relative Yohane Ndundu was fired by the government last year over various misconduct like failing to execute his duties among others.
